Four rustic cabins, made out of wood and canvas, with wooden floors and thatched roofs, offer accommodation to 2 persons each. The camp runs on solar power and if necessary, a generator supplies power, so there are no plug points available in the cabins. A central kitchen and lapa is available to be shared by guests staying in the cabins .
Each of the rustic cabins is furnished with 2 single beds and has en-suite bathroom facilities. The communal kitchen is equipped with a gas stove, fridges, barbecue facilities and a dining area. A communal lapa is available for storytelling around the campfire.
Take note that there are no public facilities at Vhembe Wilderness Trails Camp, but the restaurant at Leokwe Rest Camp offers a wide choice of meals and it’s best to make a booking in advance. The day visitor’s area has picnic and barbecue facilities and the Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre provides full details on the historical value of this site.
The lush riverine forest in which the Vhembe Wilderness Trails Camp is located, provides spectacular bird watching and game viewing opportunities.
Even though the Interpretation Centre is not located at the Forest Camp, this World Heritage Site is interesting and informative and was also the winner of the World Architectural Awards in 2009. Knowledgeable guides offer tours to visitors, providing them with insight into the historical richness of the area.
Being close to the border between South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, this facility is the ideal place for an intimate group of friends and family who are not only interested in the cultural and historical richness to be explored, but also want to relax and enjoy being immersed in nature.
The history of the Mapungubwe Kingdom is displayed in the beautiful Interpretation Centre and the park and specifically the Mapungubwe Hill has been declared a World Heritage Site in 2003.
