In 1937 when the Cape Mountain Zebra was on the brink of extinction, the project to rescue this beautiful, striped animal was launched by the proclamation of the Mountain Zebra National Park in the semi-arid Groot Karoo.
With their numbers standing at over 700, the conservation of not only the zebra, but also other wildlife like the black rhino and cheetah was successfully done at this reserve, which is located 12 km from Nxuba - previously called Cradock - in the malaria-free Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
While most of the accommodation offered at Mountain Zebra National Park are located in the main Rest Camp, there are two more accommodation options available for those who prefer a bit of seclusion and the peace and quiet of staying in a secluded place, outside the camp.
View LodgeA variety of cottages offer accommodation in the Mountain Zebra Rest Camp. The larger cottages accommodate families, and the smaller cottages can accommodate 2 persons each. Campsites for 2 to 6 persons are available.
View LodgeCovering more than 28 000 hectares of pristine vegetation between the craggy heights and deep valleys of the Bankberg, the beautiful scenery of rolling plains and invigorating crystal-clear air provide the perfect ambience for a tranquil experience and exceptional wildlife viewing on this uncrowded, remote and rustic reserve. An additional 896 000 hectares of the Mountain Zebra-Camdeboo Protected Environment surrounds the park, expanding the conservation area even further.
With their numbers turning at a frightening low of 25 in 1964, various persons donated zebras to the park and from there on, the numbers increased steadily. Capture and relocation of zebras have been part of the management of the park since 1978 and the herd is currently over 700 strong. More land was also added to the reserve to expand it to its current size of 284 km2.
Elements of three different biomes or vegetation types are found at the Mountain Zebra Park, including Karoo Escarpment Grassland, Eastern Cape Thicket and Eastern Upper Karoo, therefore supporting a variety of animals and birds. Hyena, lions and cheetah were also introduced to the park and these can be tracked on a specialised guided tour.
An average of 400mm of rain falls in this area each year, mostly during the summer months. Occasional snowfall is experienced in the winter and summers are mild, especially in relation to some other SANParks.
A variety of ancient and historical sites showcasing artefacts and
rock art from earlier days can be visited. Stretching from prehistoric
times, through 14 000 to 10 000 years ago when the Later Stone Age inhabitants
lived in the area, until about 300 years ago when the San left their
works of art in rock shelters, there is sufficient proof of the lifestyles
lived by our ancestors.
Accommodation is offered in the Mountain Zebra Rest Camp as well as in the secluded and rustic Rock Chalets for hikers and adventurers, and the historical Doornhoek Guesthouse.
The Mountain Zebra National Park is located 24 km from the nearest town, Cradock. Banks, medical services, vehicle services, etc are available in town.
Attracting guests who prefer seclusion, peace and quiet without the crowds and breathtaking views over endless vistas, surrounded by wildlife and a wide variety of birds.
